FAQ's
Physiotherapy helps people recover after injury, illness or disability through using hands-on treatment such as manual therapy, including joint mobilisation/manipulation and soft tissue treatments, acupuncture, electrotherapy including ultrasound, exercise, education and advice.
Physiotherapist is a protected title so can only be used by someone who is appropriately qualified and registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council. It is illegal to use the title of Physiotherapist, Physio or Physical Therapist if not registered. All the Physiotherapists at Cathryn Clark Physiotherapy are of course registered and keep up with regular continuous professional development and maintain certain standards to remain on the register. You can check the register here www.hcpc-uk.org/check-the-register/
The Physiotherapists at Cathryn Clark Physiotherapy have the knowledge, skills and experience to assess and treat any condition or injury which is causing pain, weakness or loss of function to your joints, muscle or nerves…..anything in your musculoskeletal system. This includes, but is not restricted to back pain, “sciatica”, neck pain, osteoarthritis, tendon problems, ligament sprains, muscle strains/tears, shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle injuries. If the assessment finds that your issues are not musculoskeletal, the Physiotherapist will advise who the best professional is to see and write to your GP if necessary.
No you do not need to be referred by your GP or Consultant, you can self-refer. All Physiotherapists at Cathryn Clark Physiotherapy are experienced in being the “first point of contact” for many patients and will write to your GP or Consultant if further investigations or another professional opinion is needed.
The Physiotherapist will take a full history from you by listening to you and asking questions as necessary. She/he will then do a physical examination including your posture, how you move, range of movement, muscle strength and any other relevant tests. She/he will then advise on diagnosis, if appropriate, discuss a treatment plan with you and start some treatment with you.
The Physiotherapist will need to see how you move and examine the affected joint/muscles and the surrounding area. Therefore you may wish to bring a pair of shorts for a lower limb/back problem, or a vest top for upper limb/neck problems. Your dignity will be maintained throughout and you will only be required to undress as is clinically necessary.
Every person and problem is different and it is often hard to tell how many sessions you will need at the first appointment. Your progress and further appointments will always be discussed with you. And remember the more compliant you are with the Physiotherapists advice/exercises, the less appointments you will need! We have treatment and rehabilitation packages available if the Physiotherapists thinks that will best help you achieve your goals.
